About Shelters

This graph gives a breakdown of what different types of material can be designed to protect against. To come up with this list we view the materials through the lens of standard practices in general construction and the field of shelter design and occupant protection.

To protect against a force (earth or man made), you need a good structure. To protect against airborne pathogens, you need air filtration. To protect against radiation, you need mass between you and the radiation source.

The first column is just the shelter itself (without an air filtration unit), and with a direct access way.

Column two adds an air filtration unit.

Column three adds both the air filtration system and a correctly designed access way.

The adequacy of a shelter to protect against airborne pathogens depends greatly on the air handling system and the filtration system that goes with it.

To protect against fire such as a Forrest fire or scorching flares from the Sun you will have to:

  1. Determine the duration of the fire
  2. Shut down the air handling system and seal it off and make provision for adding oxygen and removing CO2 for the duration of the event.

The assumptions that are made is that these shelters are constructed using the best construction methods available, and that the designs are for standard earth cover.
